Cronos Devouring his Children (1819–1823) painted by the Spanish painter Francisco Goya. This is one of the 14 "Black Paintings" , a series of 14 very dark and haunting paintings from when the artist, in his 70s, was beset by physical and mental health problems, and was tormented by a dread of old age and fear of madness. This depicts the god Cronos (Sauturn to the Romans) devouring his child. A prophecy warned that one of his childen would supplant him so he countered this threat by eating the children as his wife Rhea birthed them.
