The corpora cavernosa throughout the greater part of. their extentare closely united to each other in the median line, the septum beingvery slight or incomplete (Fig. 5). Distally, however, they becomeslender and diverge to end in the base of the glans, on each side of theOS penis. The structure varies greatly in the different regions. To-ward the distal extremit)^, the corpora cavernosa are composed almostentirely of compact adipose tissue, supported by slight fibrous trabecula3 2 Retterer, E., Sur Iorigine et Ievohition variable de la charpente qui existe dansle gland des mammiferes. C. R. Soc. de Biologic, Paris, Fig. , C. M. Jackson 75 extending in from the tunica albuginea (Fig. 4). The appearance ofthe corpora cavernosa in this region is in striking contrast to that ofthe corpus spongiosum, especially in injected specimens. Still morestriking is the appearance of a specimen stained with osmic acid, inwhich the corpora cavernosa are stained jet black. Passing from thedistal extremity, the corpora cavernosa gradually enlarge, and becomemore fibrous and vascular. The vessels are irregular venous channels, best developed in the center of each corpus, so that the adipose tissue
