Portrait photo circa 1870s of Rutherford B Hayes (1822 – 1893) – the 19th US President (1877 – 1881). Hayes fought in the American Civil War, reaching the rank of Major General and being wounded in action, and served as Governor of Ohio before being winning the Presidency in a highly disputed election. During his term in office he removed Federal troops from the South and also ordered soldiers to suppress the Great Railroad Strike of 1877.
