It willbe recalled that an attempt was already made to organizethe single women under a rule known as the Order ofSpiritual Virgins. But all efforts looking toward thebringing about of a similar organization among the Breth-ren had thus far come to naught. The only government of this peculiar settlement thus farconsisted of the dictates of Conrad Beissel, or Brother Con-rad as he was usually called, and even these were frequentlyignored, as there existed no means of enforcing his com-mands.
