Burgh Castle Roman Fort overlooking the River Waveney and Berney Marshes RSPB Reserve. Over 2000 years ago this area was known to the Iceni as Garu-An. After the Roman occupation it became known as Gariannonum. The fort was a garrison for the Roman Cavalry knwon as the Stablesian Horse. After the Romans left in 436AD a Saxon settlement was on the site, known as Cnobheresburg.
