Fish, c1850. Artist: Robert Kent Thomas

Fish, c1850. Around the central image are vignettes of boats fishing for mackerel, and for anchovies with flares, of spearing fish and catching with rod and line. Cod is being preserved by salting and hanging up to dry and herrings are being packed in barrels for curing. Isinglass, a pure gelatin used as a clarifying agent in jellies, for glue and for food preservation, is being prepared from the swimbladders of fish. Fish is being sold in a market, and being served as food. From Graphic Illustrations of Animals and Their Utility to Man by Thomas Varty. (London, c1850).
