This little remnant, underthe command of a lieutenant, represented theregiment in the subsequent operations, foughtbravely all the time, and lost heavily. It wasin service one year, three months and twenty-four days, and enrolled one thousand and foi-ty-seven men, of whom two hundred and onewere killed, five hundred and fifteen wounded, thirty-seven died in prison,and forty-nine died of disease, making its total loss eight hundred and. Leopold Karpeles was color-sergeant in this 57th and it was at thebattle of the Wilderness, May 6, 1864, that he won his medal of honor, in doingwhich he proved himself to be of the stuff of which heroes are made. He was the only color-bearer to stand his ground on that portion of thefield occupied by his regiment when the fire was hottest and the slaughtergreatest, and his standard was the rallying-point of a sufficient number ofmen to keep the enemy in check. The heroic little party rallied around the colors borne by Karpeles, andremained under a hot fire for over two hours, when, under cover of darknessthey fell back and reorganized the company in time to take part in thesucceeding days battle.
