Riyadh and the surrounding desert in Saudi Arabia, seen from the International Space Station (ISS). North is towards top right. Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, is at upper right. It lies on the western edge of the Najd plateau, with the elevation rising to the left of this image which includes numerous rocky ridges and sand dunes, as well as gully-eroded hillsides and dry river beds and valleys. The river bed running through the city itself is called Wadi Hanifa. Photographed by an Expedition 42 astronaut on 9 November 2014.
