Cataract surgery. Close-up of an eye during micro- surgery to remove the lens due to cataract. The eye has been clamped open. Mydriatic eye-drops have been applied to the eye to widen the black pupil. The surgeon is suturing around the cornea after removing the damaged eye lens from behind the pupil. At this stage a prosthetic (artificial) eye lens has been inserted as a replacement. Cataract refers to any opacity or clouding of the lens, which results in blurred vision. Treatment may involve removal of the whole lens (intra- capsular extraction), as seen here, or extracapsular extraction where the capsule of the lens is left in place.
