Orchid flowers (Orchis patens, also known as O. spitzelii). One of the petals (pink spots on white) of each flower is called the lip. It is a specialised structure that attracts pollinators and provides them with a landing platform. This orchid is found in most of the Mediterranean and southern Europe. It is a terrestrial orchid (one that grows in the ground). There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers. Photographed in Liguria, Italy.
