Saturn, Cassini infrared image. This view is of a region of Saturn's southern hemisphere. A section of the rings (blue) is visible at lower right. The banded appearance of the planet is caused by the variation in composition of clouds in its atmosphere. This image was obtained using three infrared filters on Cassini's wide-angle camera. The spacecraft was at a distance of about 822,000 kilometres from Saturn, and acquired the image on 13 December 2006.
