Red blood cells inside a blood vessel, computer artwork. Red blood cells (erythrocytes) are responsible for carrying gases around the body. The cells contain the red pigment haemoglobin, which binds to gases. The cells pick up oxygen in the lungs and carry it to the tissues where it is required. It then picks up the waste gas carbon dioxide from the tissues and returns it to the lungs to be exhaled.
