Over the west portal of a former cathedral, now the Église Sainte-Marie, in Oloron-Sainte-Marie, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France. This caryatid is one of a pair of shackled prisoners, chained together at the waist.
Oloron-Sainte-Marie, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France: the strain and pain of spending hundreds of years helping to hold up the weighty Romanesque tympanum over the west portal of Oloron’s former cathedral, now the Église Sainte-Marie (Church of St. Mary), is all too obvious on the face of this prisoner shackled at the waist and feet. The captive is one of two superbly carved medieval caryatids supporting the central pillar and two semicircular arches above. They survived a devastating fire in the late 11th century.
