Editorial use only. This image may not be used to state or imply endorsement by CERN of any product, activity or service Building CERN accelerator, 1974. Worker inside the tunnel being made for the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) accelerator at CERN, the European particle physics laboratory, Switzerland. The SPS was the first of the large accelerators at CERN, being an underground ring with a 7-kilometre circumference that extends across the border into France. It was completed by 1976. It receives particles from the smaller accelerators and accelerates them to even higher energies, smashing them into targets or colliding two particle beams together. It was used to discover the W and Z particles in 1983, and is now used to inject particles into even larger accelerators. CERN was founded in 1954.
