In a recent number of the Journal (October, 1888, ) the rack-rail system for mountain railroads devisedby Herr Roman Abt, the best system of the kind yet intro-duced, was illustrated and described. In an article re-cently published in the Vienna Zeitschrift Jiir Risen-. THE EIFFEL TOWER AT THE PARIS EXPOSITION. the tower as it appeared when seen from the opposite sideof the river at the beginning of November. The illustra-tion also shows some of the principal buildings now incourse of construction on the grounds of the erection appearing like a tower in the background,within the center arch of the Eiffel Tower, is the lowerportion of the large dome which rises above the main en-trance to the Exhibition ; the long building at the back isthe large machinery hall, extending right across theChamp dc Mars ; the building on the right of the tower,with a cupola, is intended for the exhibition of liberal arts ;;ind the corresponding building, on the left, for that of thefine arts. At the foot of the tower, and along the quay, bahncn und Dampfschiffahrt, Herr Abt gives an elabo-rate argument in favor of his system, which lack of spaceprevents us from reproducing, and adds the following ac-count of recent
