This machine was considered to have been one of Mr Montgolfier's most brilliant creations, at 68ft high and 74ft wide. After 35 minutes of firing the burner, the ascent was completed at a quarter to five, to the sound of music and applause. Mr Pilâtre du Rozier and Mr Proust, a physicist, were the voyagers who, in the space of three quarters of an hour, had covered 12 leagues and landed safely between Champlatreux and Chantilli. HRH the Prince de Condé provided them with transport to take them to the Château de Versailles. In reality, the count of Haga was king Gustave III of Sweden who had made a long voyage over Europe under this borrowed name."
