His loyalty to his friends was such that nothingcould shake it, and the thoughtful kindness for those with whom he camein contact made him one of the best loved men it was our good fortune toknow. Throughout his life, in sunshine and in shadow (and like all ofus Dr. Brown had some clouds hanging over his head), he was the sametrue gentleman. The death of Dr. John Young Brown has made a voidin the medical profession which will be hard to fill, but it made a voidin the hearts of his friends that will never be Dr. J. Henry Carstens. Bell JOHN Henry Carstens, founder, ex-president, and one of the mostactive and enthusiastic members of our Association, died August 7th,1920, at his home in Detroit, after an illness of several months. .Born in Kiel, Germany, June, 1848, Dr. Carstens came to America inthe early years of his life, his parents locating in the vicinity of Detroitwhere he received his education in the Public Schools and German-American Seminary. His medical education was received in the DetroitCollege of Medicine, from which institution he graduated in 1870. Bydint of hard work, and an indomitable will, Dr. Carstens rapidly forgedhis way to the front ranks of his profession so that at the time of hisdeath he bore an international reputation as a skillful surgeon and suc-cessful teacher, was president of the faculty of his
