Electromagnetic clock. 19th-century artwork of the internal working of an electromagnetic clock developed by German inventor August Kramer (1817-1885). Kramer developed a form of telegraphy in the 1840s, and is also credited with the invention of an early electromagnetic clock. The first electric clocks were invented in the 1840s. They operated on the principle of an electromagnetic pendulum or spring powered by an electric current. Here, the electromagnets are at centre left. Artwork from an 1873 edition of a German book on the application of electromagnetism to the new technology of telegraphy.
