Rhode Island (or more properly Rhode Island and Providence Plantations), although the smallest State of the Union,is considerably larger than many of the sovereignties of Europe, and in point of intelligence and productive powers, farin advance of any American community of the same population. It is situated between 41° 22 and 42° 03 latitudesnorth, and between 71° 06and 71° 38 longitudes west from Greenwich, or 5° 24and 5° 56 east from bounds it on the north and the east, the Atlantic Ocean on the south, and Connecticut on the west.
