The prime purpose of the various towage and salvage companies in Hong Kong is to serve the containership traffic entering and leaving the Kwai Chung container terminals, while at the same time being available to the many smaller, mainly bulk cargo facili- ties. In a port as busy as Hong Kong where 30,703 ocean-going vessels arrived in 2012, it is vital that in addition to its more everyday tasks, a fleet of tugs and salvage vessels is available 24-hours a day, 365 days a year in the event that a vessel or vessels get into difficulty.
