It is reported that the 5th Michigan was the first regiment to raise itscolors on the works of Petersburg. In following up the retreat of that portion of the enemy which took theline of the South Side Railroad, the regiment was deployed as skirmishers,and on the 4th and 5th, pressed the rear guardclosely. On the 6th a standwas made at SailorsCreek to protect thecrossing of baggage,when the brigade madea charge, capturing onehundred and seventy-three wagons. Theregiment took a standof colors and one hun-dred and forty-fiveprisoners. Mundell writes regarding thework at Sailors Creek:. Mundell and the Sleeping Soldiers. At this engagement our company was deployed as skirmishers, andcaptured the enemy with the assistance of the balance of the brigade. Asw^e charged their works, I demanded the flag of their color-bearer, where-upon he handed it to me. For this I received a medal of honor, and athirty days furlough. After this I was in the engagement at New Store,April Sth; Appomattox Court House, April 9th; and received my dischargeat Jeffersonville, Indiana, July 5, 1S65. FRANCIS M. CUNNINGHAM.
