Melorheostosis of the lower leg. X-ray of lower leg of a patient with the bone disease melorheostosis. Melorheostosis is the abnormal development (dysplasia) of mesenchyma connective tissue that causes the bony cortex to widen and become hyperdense. Researchers at the National Institutes of Health have been studying the genetic basis of this rare bone disease. Results of the research, published in 2018, may lead to potential treatments.
