Johnson and Agnew watching Apollo 11 launch. Former US President Lyndon B. Johnson (left, 1908-1973) and US Vice President Spiro T. Agnew (right, 1918-1996), with spectators watching the launch of Apollo 11 from the Kennedy Space Centre, Florida, USA, at 09:32 local time (13:32 UTC) on 16 July 1969. Apollo 11 launched on a Saturn V rocket. It was the first crewed mission to land on the Moon. Crew members were Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Edwin 'Buzz' Aldrin. Armstrong and Aldrin landed on the Moon's surface on 20 July, while Collins remained in lunar orbit in the command module. They returned to Earth and landed in the Pacific Ocean on 24 July. Johnson had succeeded President Kennedy who had made a speech in 1961 declaring the goal of reaching the Moon. Agnew served in the Nixon administration.
