Portugal: National Palace and Monastery of Mafra


The National Palace of Mafra is a mixture of royal residence and monastery. It was built under the reign of King John 5th from 1717 to 1755 and cost the life of almost 1400 workers. It is the largest royal palace in Portugal and includes a library with a treasure of more than rare books.
