Byzantine mosaic. This mosaic was built in the ancient city of Edessa in what is now Sanliurfa, Turkey. It was uncovered at an archaeological site in the Haleplibahce district of the city. The mosaic dates from the 5th and 6th centuries, when the city was under Byzantine rule, and the palace in which it was found is thought to have belonged to a high-ranking administrator of the Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantium). This mosaic depicts an Amazonian queen, a figure from Greek and Roman mythology. Thought to be Penthesileia, she is hunting with bow and arrow on horseback. Photographed in 2009.
