St Peter's Chapel (St Peters on the Wall) , Bradwell on Sea, Essex, built 653-4 AD, restored 1920 and site of Roman fort Othona

St Peter's Chapel (St Peters on the Wall) at Bradwell on Sea, Essex was built a few years after St Cedd of Lindisfarne founded a church here in in 653 AD on the edge of the ancient Roman fort site of Othona, using material from the fort. Used as a barn from around 1750, it was restored for use as a chapel in 1920. It is a Grade I listed building. In 1946, a former RAF chaplain, Norman Mott, cycled out from East London as far east as he could go, ending up at the chapel. He founded the Othona community in tents and sheds in an adjoining area, and it is now well a well-established open Christian community there in more permanent buildings, with members around the country and abroad making regular visits. Others too are welcomed to its various activities. The community holds its morning and evening worship in the chapel, which is also used for Sunday services by some local residents and is the site of a Good Friday walk of witness and an annual pilgrimage in July.
