In 1820, just before heassumed the reins of the government, he met withthe most terrible affliction of his life in the death ofhis wife, whom he had loved with a devotion which hasperhaps never been surpassed. No man had more bitterenemies or warmer friends. At the expiration of histwo terms of office he retired to the Hermitage, wherehe died fune 8, 1845.
