Lantern Slide 14: The State Department at the center and the Treasury at the left in this photograph by Mathew Brady in 1856. This of course was prior to the construction of the old State, War and Navy Building in 1871-1893. The corner stone for the White House was laid October 13, 1792. John Adams was the first president to occupy the building, in November 1800.
