Appuldurcombe House is now a deserted shell, the mansion long abandoned but now cared for by English Heritage. There has been a building since the 12th century, but the present building is largely 18th century designed by architect John James with grounds designed by Capability Brown, on behalf of Sir Robert Worsley,Baronet. There is a famous scandal with wife, the 17 year old Seymour Dorothy Fleming, whom he married 'for love and £80,000’. After he sued one of his wife's rumoured 27 lovers, the couple informally separated. Seymour could not re-marry until Richard's death, and she become a professional mistress or demimondaine, living off the donations of rich men in order to survive, joining other upper-class women in a similar position in The New Female Coterie. The House has since been a hotel, barracks and monastery for the exiled Benedictine monks of Solesmes Abbey prior to permanently relocating at Quarr Abbey. A mine damaged the roof during WW2 when the house seemed beyond repair. It is now a famous haunted building and a focus fro ghost hunters every year.
