LAYTON, Vernon Cecil, an Elderwho died in the missionary field, wasborn Feb. 12, 1896, in Kaysville, DavisCo., Utah, a son of Christopher Lay-ton, jun., and Jane Elizabeth was baptized when eight years oldby William Blood, and later ordainedan Elder. Elder Layton was set apartfor a mission to California by ElderJ. Golden Kimball May 27, 1919. Afterlaboring in Arizona for twenty-onemonths he was taken sick with kidneytrouble, from which he died Feb. 8,1921, at San Diego, while en routefrom Arizona to San Francisco. Hisbiother, who was at his bedside whenhe died, brought the body home toKaysville, where services were heldin the tabernacle on his twenty-fifth. Lake City, Utah, a son of PatriarchWm. Leatham and Martha Ann Sal-isbury. His grandparents were earlyresidents of Utah and his maternalgrandfather, Joshua Salisbury was, itis claimed, the pioneer of dry landfarming in Utah and the West. Leatham was baptized in theSalt Lake Tabernacle font by ElderGeorge A. Davis Feb. 4, 1911, andreceived his education in the publicschools of Salt Lake City and in theextension division of the Universityof Utah. He was ordained to officesin the Aaronic Priesthood and ordain-ed an Elder May 25, 1925, by BishopLeGrand P. Backman. He was ordain-ed a Seventy Aug. 31, 1927, by Ru-lon S. Wells, just prior to leaving ona mission to Great Britain.
