The name of Dr. B. , Surgeon of the 14th IllinoisInfantry, is the first connected with thesystematic organization of the Grand Armyof the Republic. In the winter of 1865-6he discussed with comrades at Springfield, III.,the feasibility and propriety of an organiza-tion of veteran soldiers.
