AIDS counselling. An East African woman, Feliciana aged 28 (at left), receives one-to-one counselling at Majengo clinic. As an HIV positive prostitute, Feliciana is part of a group selected for a study into AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome). Here she receives counselling to educate her about AIDS, a prolonged and incurable syndrome which may affect her over many years, and that may arouse strong social prejudices. Although she carries the HIV virus which causes AIDS, she has no symptoms of immunodeficiency. Up to 10% of prostitutes from this area are HIV resistant, although they have been exposed to the HIV virus. Photographed at Pumwani in Nairobi, Kenya.
