[Great applause.] Now, my friends, let us glance for a moment at the basis uponwhich rests the whole theory of what is called the Greenbackcreed ; improperly so called, however, as the Greenback belongsto the Republican party by patent right, and the use of itsname in designation of a spurious article is as unwarranted asit is dishonest. The basis of the Greenback creed, that whichunderlies the main structure, as well as its various wings andadditions,—and this, too, whether promulgated in the platformsof the National party or the Democratic party, or in their cam-. LOGAN IN THE SENATE. 613 paign documents, or by their speakers on the stump,—is thesimple assertion that a government has the power to createmoney. Now you will observe that there is a broad distinctionbetween the creation of actual or real money and the creation ofrepresentative money. Governments can create representativemoney, and every civilized government of the world probablydoes so at this day. But mark the difference between realmoney and representative money. Real money is somethingwhich has an exchangeable value among all commercial nations,and long usage has constituted the precious metals the materialsof which it shall be made. Representative money is something which represents realmoney. Gold and silver are the metals which, by universal con-sent, are used as the standards of value. And being so recog-nized, they have an inherent worth—that is,
