Sounkyo in the Daisetsuzan National Park is a scenic gorge surrounded by 100m high forested cliffs with a river flowing and road passing through.

Sounkyo Gorge stretches for over 20km and features many cliffs and waterfalls. The Ishikari river runs through the gorge and during the winter, some of the waterfalls completely freeze over. During the summer, the gorge is filled with green from the plants and trees growing there.
