Sometimes he came into direct conflict with JudgeDouglas. On one occasion, referring to Douglass statement that he would trustin Providence to bring about a certain issue in behalf of slavery, Lincoln said : The Judges trusting in Providence reminds me of the old woman who hadbeen run away with by a fractious horse.
