Illustrated 67 TICONDEROGA ANDERERS still, we have threadedthe silvery pathway of the Horican,and are drifting idly toward the grayold ruins of the forest stronghold,venerable in its departed grandeur,crowned with the wild legends andhistorical associations that cluster around itscrumbling battlements and telling its story of lovesand hates, of hopes and fears, of the glitteringpomps of warfare, of booming cannon and the roll-ing drum, of glad pasans of victory, the solemn dirge,of death. Of earthly plans, of ambitions wild, of thearrogant assumption of puny man, and the love offorgiving Nature, who tenderly covers over the scarsand hides the ruined hopes under a mantle of livinggreen. The trip overland from Lake George to LakeChamplain cannot, strictly speaking, be called agreen spot in the memory, for my recollection ofthe place is that it almost always rains, or has justbeen doing so, in which case the spots are a decided 6
