Elkins was born in Philadelphia, March 15, 1828,the death of the father occurring when the son was aboy at school. He attended Philadelphia institutionsand. marrying in young manhood, came to Pittsburgh in1868. The oil business offered him his first field ofwork, his first venture in association with his brother,William L. Elkins, in the organization of the River-side Oil Company, whose works were the largest andmost complete in the district. This company marketedthe first gasoline in Pittsburgh and
