The fort of Agra forms one of the most interesting specimens of military architecturethat is to be found in India ; and was evidently a place of vast strength before the art ofwar became entirely changed by the invention of gunpowder: its high battlemented wallsof red granite, lofty towers, postern gates, and inclined planes, with the golden symbolof Mogul supremacy gleaming above its pinnacles and cupolas, altogether present animposing assemblage of objects. Until the events of 1857, no attempt had ever beenmade to maintain the fort of Agra against a hostile force, and it consequently had remained ^»«.
