Earth and Moon. 17th-century diagram concerning the illumination of the Earth and Moon. This diagram and the accompanying Latin text is from 'Astronomiae Pars Optica' (1604) by German astronomer, astrologer and mathematician Johannes Kepler (1571-1630). This work is considered the founding text in the science of optics. Kepler wrote about various topics in astronomy and optics, including the inverse-square law for light intensity, reflection, pinhole cameras, parallax, the apparent sizes of astronomical bodies, and the human eye.
