The box restedon a scale platform or on a system of levers whichtransmitted a certain fraction of the downward pressureto a scale platform. The upper bearing was of a woodbox open at the top and bottom and partially filled withsand. A bearing plate made of a wood plank rested ontop of the sand and fitted inside the box. The breakingload was applied by means of a jack, operated by a handlever. The sand boxes were so constructed that thetile was embedded in the sand for 90° of the circum-ference at the top and the same at the bottom. The hvdraulic bearings consisted of two timbers, each. The three-point bearings consisted of two 4 inch by 4inch timbers, with half round strips nailed on. Thelower timber had nailed to its top two half round strips,2 inches apart, center to center. But one strip was usedon the under side of the top timber and the committeefinally decided to omit this in future tests. A strip ofrubber belting was inserted between the strips and thetile, but the committee decided to discontinue the use ofthis also on future tests. The clay tile were roughly graded and marked as towhether they
