Lt. A. J. Sutton from the Signal Corps captured this photograph, numbered 13860, during World War One. The image depicts a young Belgian boy named Jack Gengo, whose family was mistreated by the Germans. Jack suffered severe injuries including burns, a split tongue, and castration. He has been adopted by the 1st Army Headquarters Regiment in Brest, France. The photograph was taken on July 2, 1918, and issued by the American Expeditionary Forces on May 27, 1918. Censorship approval was given on June 19, 1918.
