At the same time it was stronglyfortified; its colossal walls, a hundred feet high, with their fifteenhundred towers, bidding defiance to all enemies. Yet, so totally wasit destroyed, that, in the second century after Christ, not a vestigeremained of it; and its very site was long a matter of uncertainty. This book is surpassed by none in sublimity of description. Itconsists of a single poem which opens with a solemn description of theattributes and operations of Jehovah (i. 2-8).
