Fistules occur as a result of wounds of the parotid salivarygland and its ducts. The possibility of establishing on the facesuch an abnormal exit for the saliva must be remembered whenoperating in the region in front of, or below, the ear, whether forthe primary treatment of an injury from projectiles or for recon-struction of a scarred surface. Suppuration from any cause in this part of the face may giverise to a similar salivary fistule by establishing an abnormal com-munication between the parotid gland tissue and the cutaneoussurface, behind the proximal end of the parotid duct, or at anypoint in its course. The line of this duct is from the middle ofthe lobe of the ear towards a point midway between the ala ofthe nose and the corner of the mouth. The duct ends at theanterior edge of the massete
