A third volume,Nature and Elements of Poetry, discusses the principlesof poetic art. In these volumes Stedman has producedprobably the most notable criticism that has been writtenin America. The only author who can be compared withhim is Lowell, and while Lowell has the advantage in hisracy style, Stedmans criticism is more deliberate, betterbalanced, than Lowells.
