He then returned to Walton and engagedin the flour and grain business, erecting there asmall elevator with a capacity of ten thousandbushels. He and shipped grain fromthe West all over Pennsylvania, New York andNew Jersey, doing both a wholesale and retailbusiness. For a time he ran a flour and feed mill,and in the three years in which he was engagedin business was quite successful. Later he soldout, and in 1887 removed to Binghamton, wherehe intended starting in the wholesale grain andproduce business, but the competition was sogreat he abandoned the idea and resumed con-tracting and building. While residing in thatplace he built some large blocks, including thatof Regan & McHale, and many fine JAMES H. SARVIS. PORTRAIT AND BIOGRAPHICAL, RECORD. ^5 In 1892 he came to Middletown and entered theemplo} of Lindsey Bros., where he remained fiveor six months, when the firm failed. He thenengaged in contracting and building for himselfand has continued in the business with good suc-cess. His shop and office are located on the cor-ner of Prospect Street and Wickham Avenue,and his residence at No. 3 Linden Block. While still residing in Delaware County was united in marriage with MissMary Neish, a native of that countx. Two chil-dren have been born to them, Earl S. and residing at Walton, Mr. Matthews wasmade a member of the Independent Order of RedMen, but does not at present hold membershipwith the order.
