It measures 57 x 118cm, and may originally have been a part of the predella beneath Lorenzetti's Presentation in the Temple, dated 1342. Damaged and darkened, it is held by the Pinacoteca Nazionale, in Siena. (A narrow section is missing in this reproduction.) On the left side are scenes from Genesis representing Creation and the Fall. A winged Death accompanies Adam and Eve as they are expelled from Eden. In the large middle section we see the Reaper flying over both the Crucifixion and over the traditional pile of corpses, including a pope. The former reminds the audience that it is by Christ's own death that mankind was redeemed. The latter, along with a preaching hermit, a parade of the living, and some foreground figures, constitute the conventional Triumph of Death elements. In approaching Death they are also approaching Christ. (Matthew 16:25.) Behind the procession is the City on a Hill. (Matthew 5:14.) On the right side is a Christ in Majesty or Deesis with the Virgin and Baptist. Angels carry the Cross as symbol of triumph over death, while the Elect carry their own cross. (Matthew 16:24.) At the lower right a demonic figure (possibly also Death) drives the damned into the Pit. circa 1342.
