Brain scan. Coloured magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of a normal brain and head shown in profile. The large, folded purple area at the top is the cerebrum, the seat of higher faculties such as intelligence, creativity and consciousness. The dark area inside it is one of the brain's fluid- filled ventricles, which nourish the brain and cushion it against sudden movements. The bottom part of the brain (behind the nasal cavity) includes the spinal cord and cerebellum, which control involuntary functions like breathing and balance.
