Carina Nebula pillar. Infrared Hubble Space Telescope (HST) image of a stellar jet (centre) in a three-light-year-long pillar of gas and dust within the Carina Nebula. The pillar is sculpted by radiation and streams of charged particles from hot, massive stars. In the pillar itself new stars are forming. The Carina Nebula (NGC 3372) is a starbirth region about 7500 light years from Earth in the constellation of Carina. Image obtained by the IR (infrared) sensor on Hubble's Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) and published on 9 September 2009 in the Hubble Servicing Mission 4 Early Release Observations (SM4 ERO).
