Amongst the Ancient Greek civilisations the geometric style of decorating pottery has been popular since Minoan times. Around 900 BC geometric designs became very popular in Athens and different motifs such as abstract animals and humans began to appear. This became a vogue amongst Ancient Greek potters and geometric designs became dominant in what is now known as the Geometric Period (900 to 700 BC). The most popular geometric designs used by Ancient Greek potters were circles, checkers, triangle, zigzags, swastikas and meanders.
