Before sunset on the 28th Geary was at Wanhatchie andHoward to the left near Browns Ferry. General Smith liad carried out his part of the programbefore Hookers arrival. Tlie troops assigned to him wereHazens and Turcliins brigades of Woods division (4000men). Hazen was ordered to organize a force to float downin pontoons, distance nine miles by riverthree miles by land, and to eftect a land-ing at or near the ferry, when the remain-der of the force was to be rowed across andthe boats then used to lay a bridge.
